When families first reach out to us, all of their focus is on one thing: how to get their loved one better.
That’s our priority too—which is why it often surprises families when one of the first things we ask them to do is focus on themselves instead.
The response is usually some version of:
“This isn’t about me.”
“She’s the one with the problem.”
“They need help first.”
Or as one family member put it: “I just don’t get how me being healthy will help him want to recover.”
Here’s the Truth
Your recovery might not guarantee your loved one gets sober. There are no guarantees with addiction.
But it will give them the absolute best chance at recovery.
Here’s why:
When you’re caught in the chaos with your loved one — stuck in that loop of confusion, anger, and fear — you’re not able to offer effective support. You’re scrambling, in fight-or-flight mode, just as desperate and chaotic as they are.
You can’t throw someone a life jacket when you’re drowning right alongside them.
But when you start taking care of yourself, stop obsessing over what you can’t control, and walk your own recovery path, you become a powerful resource for recovery.
Now when your loved one reaches out for help, you have knowledge, tools, and bandwidth to offer real support rather than frantically trying anything in the moment.
Maybe most importantly…
You deserve to be healthy and feel good.
You deserve moments of peace and deep, full breaths every day.
I can tell you with certainty — and thousands of other people in recovery would agree — none of us want our addiction to torture our loved ones or make them sick.
None of us.
When we’re active in our addiction, we can’t take care of anyone else. But you can give that care to yourself.
Your loved one would want you to.
