I was recently thinking about a time I spoke at a treatment center to a group of 60 men in a 12-Step program. One of them asked me this:
“If you teach my family about addiction, won’t they just get all up in my business? Constantly asking if I used, if I drank, if I called my sponsor?”
Here’s what I told him: The opposite actually happens.
When families truly understand addiction, they STOP micromanaging. They stop trying to control what they can’t control.
And in doing so, they actually increase opportunities for recovery.
Something people don’t always realize about Tipping Point Recovery is that everything we do is ultimately for the person struggling with addiction.
Yes, families are the ones who show up to our programs, but our real mission is to help families understand their loved one so that everyone can recover.
Because that’s when recovery lasts.
And it leads to outcomes like this:
“[My husband and I] are living our lives together in a way that is so damn beautiful…There’s so much honesty and gratitude. We don’t run away from [our] feelings. We share them honestly with each other, and it feels good to feel…We were alone in our pain before Tipping Point. And now we’re doing life together, as a team, as a family that I’m so damn proud of.”
If you’re curious about how this approach might help your family, our live Bootcamp experience offers families the deep understanding and tools to help you to make real changes to help your loved one.
