What is a Boundary?

Text reading: "Boundaries aren't about controlling them. They are about protecting you. www.TippingPointRecovery.com"

Here’s something I hear from families all the time:

  • “I’ve tried setting boundaries, but they don’t work.”
  • “They just ignore them.”
  • “It made everything worse.”

And I get it. That kind of hopelessness is real.

But here’s what I want you to consider:

Most “boundaries” families try to set… aren’t really boundaries.

They’re ultimatums.
They’re threats.
They’re last-ditch efforts to get their loved one to change.

And they don’t work—because boundaries aren’t about controlling them.
They are about protecting you.

Here’s the difference:

  • ❌ “If you use again, you can’t come to family dinner.”

  • ✅ “I choose not to attend family dinner if there is alcohol.”

One tries to control their behavior. The other protects your peace.

Here’s your action step for the day:

Think of a boundary you’ve tried to set…and rewrite it so it centers your own behavior.

You deserve safety. You deserve peace.

And you don’t have to wait for your loved one to change for you to have both.
