What If Your Anger Isn’t Really Your Anger?

September 26, 2025
Text reading: "Anger is a protector - a shield that stands guard over harder feelings. www.TippingPointRecovery.com"

In Dear Family, I talk about one of the most common — and misunderstood — emotions families feel when dealing with addiction:

Anger.

You might find yourself yelling, snapping, shutting down, or feeling like you’re walking around with a constant edge.

But here’s what I want you to know:

You’re not “bad” or “mean.”
You’re not doing something wrong.

Anger is a natural response.
But it’s not always the true emotion.

Often, anger is a protector — a shield that stands guard over harder feelings like:

😔 Grief
😨 Fear
😩 Helplessness
💔 Shame

It’s a way we try to stay in control.

It’s a way we avoid feeling the things we’re afraid might break us.

But avoiding those deeper feelings doesn’t make them go away — it just keeps us stuck in the cycle.

And here’s the powerful parallel:

Just like your loved one might use substances to numb their pain…you might be using anger to numb yours.

Here’s your reflection for today:

💭 What’s really underneath your anger?

💭 What would happen if you allowed yourself to feel that instead?

💭 What might change if you responded from grief, or fear, or love — instead of reactivity?

It’s not about being perfect.

It’s about being honest.

With yourself. With your pain. With your recovery.

With love,
Kate

P.S. This is just one of many mindset shifts I walk you through in my book, Dear Family, Why Your Loved One Won’t Accept Help and How to Help Them Anyway.

If you’re ready to understand the real dynamics of addiction — and start healing your side of the relationship — this book is where to begin.
