What do you wish they knew?

We asked this question in our Facebook community last week:

“If I were talking to your addicted loved one, what are three things you would want me to tell them about you?”

The responses were raw, powerful, and heartbreakingly real:

💬 “That I love them, maybe not their actions at the time they were drinking but the person they are is always loved.”
💬 “I may not be able to fix the issues at hand, but I am here to help them fight this battle together.”
💬 “I’m sick too. I also need recovery.”
💬 “We are a team, and I want us to work together toward a happy future, both of us recovering in our own lane but together.”

You can feel the ache behind each one — the grief, the hope, the love.

We know how much you want to be understood.

To be seen. To feel like your pain counts too.

But here’s the thing: they might never hear you in the way you want them to.

Here’s the truth:

Addiction distorts everything.
It warps love.
It confuses intention.
It scrambles what should be simple.

That’s why communication in addiction recovery is not about saying more — it’s about saying something different.

Start here: A simple exercise

Take a moment today to answer this question for yourself:

“What do I wish they knew?”

Then look at your list and ask:

➡️ Which of these things do I need to give myself first?
➡️ How can I live this truth out loud, rather than wait for them to hear it?

For example:

  • If you wish they knew how much you love them…can you show yourself some of that same compassion today?
  • If you want them to know you’re working on yourself…how can you recommit to your recovery this week?

The way forward isn’t louder.

It’s clearer.
It’s calmer.
It’s different.

With you in recovery,
💗 Kate
