Meet Your Facilitators

Hi, my name is Kate Duffy.

I am both a recovering alcoholic and a family member of people who’ve struggled.

In 2013 I started the lifelong process of recovering from my addiction. Since then, I’ve made it my mission to recover not just my own life, but to teach families how to proactively insert themselves into their loved one’s recovery process and learn to give them the real support they need to finally break free.

My own alcoholism made me do unthinkable things. Like lying to my three kids. Hiding bottles. Driving drunk repeatedly. My sister admitted after I got sober that she’d been afraid for me and afraid of me. None of my family had known what to do. I wish someone had been there to tell them, “Your mom/sister/daughter has become sick, she’s self-medicating her mental-health pain with alcohol, it’s not your fault, and you are not crazy. We can help you and her.”

Once I got sober, I desperately wanted to help others who struggled from addiction. I took a job working on call with a local police department doing emergency room interventions, greeting individuals who had just experienced a non-fatal overdose. Over the course of two years, I did close to 200 interventions in the ER, engaging with the patients as a peer to help get them on a path to recovery. The one question almost every patient I spoke with asked me was, “Will you talk to my family?”

I started a family support group to help the families of these patients understand their loved ones and what was really going on with addiction. One meeting nine months into the group, I looked around the room and realized that the loved one of every single family present was in recovery. That’s when I knew what we were doing was a game changer—that the family system was the key that was missing from the current recovery system.

I created Tipping Point Recovery to bring this solution to as many families as possible, and the results have been unprecedented.

A First Look at the Trainings

Module #1: Introduction & Mindset

Addiction is messy, painful, and confusing. There’s a lot that goes into unpacking that and rebuilding through recovery, for both you and your loved one. This module is all about laying the foundation for you to build that recovery on.

Module #2: It’s Not About the Drugs and Alcohol

You are fighting the wrong problem. Your loved one’s problem is not alcohol. Alcohol is their solution. If you don’t fully understand the problem, how can you offer an effective solution? It’s time to pull back the curtain on addiction and shine a spotlight on the truth behind this disease.

We’ll uncover the root problem behind addiction and identify the ways it presents. You’ll learn to take a step back (this is not kicking them out or cutting them off) rather than engage with the addiction, allowing you to respond in a new and more effective way.

Module #3: What’s Your Loop?

This module invites you to reflect on the ways you have become unwell as a result of loving someone struggling with addiction. By the end of this module, you’ll not only have clarity on the ways you’ve become caught up in the addiction cycle, but you’ll have tools to help you break those unhealthy patterns and reclaim your voice. You will know how you have been co-signing the problem and/or inadvertently being part of the continuing cycle.

Module #4: Do Something Different (Walk a Recovery Path)

Nothing changes if nothing changes. You waiting for the one with the complex and progressive disorder to change is not working. You have unrealistic expectations, and this is a large part of what’s causing you pain.

In this module we focus on new ways of communicating, making decisions, and engaging with your loved one to orient your whole family toward recovery. You will learn how your path and theirs are parallel, different and when you walk yours you can better help them find theirs.

Facebook post by Pat W. that reads, "Allen and I feel like we've gained so much through our involvement with this group and Kate's information. And we are especially thankful to have been working directly with Kate for advice and support; what a difference. We were able to come to a plan, have our 'statements' ready to repeat, and have more confidence in our approach. I think just knowing that we are working with Kate has had an impact (and James agreed to meet with Kate once which I think also made a difference....she's someone more real to him). Even though our contract didn't get off the ground before James violated it, his interactions with us were totally different and such a relief. He packed up on his own and made plans for where to stay....at least for tonight. 'Just for today' felt good. Thank you, Kate Duffy, and Tipping Point."

Steph, wife

Loving my path starting my day working from home with meditation. It feels so good to have permission to feel good myself and have tools to have a conversation that may be hard for him and not feel like I am responsible for how he responds. It feels so good to enjoy my home and take care of me and have support in facing the “elephant” in the living room rather than sticking my head in the sand. Reframing my story feels good.

Jennifer, mom

I am at a loss with what to do with my overwhelming love for the brutal honesty from everyone, the excruciating bravery exhibited by all, and the palpable pain and joy offered up for us to learn from. If I could say something to everyone in that group it would be: I have total respect and awe for what you are doing and where you are. Yes, yes, you are doing a great job. Kate Duffy: you hold us close, you see us, you know what we need. I am grateful.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much time will I need to commit for this training?

First, I’ll ask: How much time does addiction rob from you each week? The time needed here won’t compare to the time addiction has robbed you.

How much time you spend is ultimately up to you. Individual videos within the training range from 5 minutes to over an hour each, with more than 6 hours of content total. The more time you dedicate to the program, the more change you will see in your family and loved one. Past participants have reported they recoup time by being in this community and that the way they feel almost immediately makes them eager to do more!

What kind of support will be available to me during the training?

We encourage you to join our Friends of Tipping Point online community where you can engage  with and get support from others participating in the training, though you are not required to do so.

We have more personal and custom support available, and some need and prefer a private consultant to work with their family. Please email us at hello@tippingpointrecovery.com to inquire about custom and private services for you and your family.

Can other members of my family join me in the training?

Yes! Any and all members in your immediate family system are welcome to join you in the training. In fact, the more members of your family who participate, the better. After you register, simply email us at support@tippingpointrecovery.com with their names and email addresses so we can make sure they get access to everything. In the training, Kate addresses how to “get others to the table,” so we’ll help you bring recovery to everyone. That’s the goal, and Kate’s superpower is engaging others.
