She Tucked Her Keys Under the Mattress Every Night

Text reading: "'We chopped the wood and we carried the water. It was hard. There were a lot of tears.' www.TippingPointRecovery.com"

When Lindsay found me, her husband had been to five rehabs.

She was the sole breadwinner. She’d leave for work every morning not knowing what she’d come home to. How drunk would he be? How bad would the house mess be? Would he even be alive?

She tucked her car keys under her mattress every night. It was the only place she could think of that he wouldn’t find them. She’d lie there waiting to feel the mattress lift.

She had a one-year-old.

She joined our program because her daycare owner handed her my number and she figured she had nothing left to lose.

Here’s what Lindsay told a room full of families recently, four years into her husband’s sobriety.

She said the values in her house now are the values she’s learned at Tipping Point. She said she gave up all the roles she thought she had to have – his case manager, his scheduler, his life-keeper. She said she has hobbies now. He has hobbies. She sits on the Historic Commission in her town. He sits on the Planning Board.

And then she said this:

“We chopped the wood and we carried the water. It was hard. There were a lot of tears. But it felt so good to feel. It felt so good to work through the stuff we didn’t even know we were carrying.”

That’s what’s possible. Not perfection. Not a guarantee. A life back.

I’m bringing families together again on May 19th. It’s a live and interactive workshop, two hours, and the investment is $47.

If you’ve been reading these emails for the last few weeks and something has been building in you, this is where to go next.

Talk soon, Kate

P.S. If you know you want to be there, grab your spot now. The room is intentionally small.
