“There’s nothing you can do.”
Chances are you’ve heard this as the family of someone with substance use disorder.
Cheryl was told the same thing, again and again, everywhere she turned to help her daughter.
“I went to her school counselor, and they couldn’t help me. I went to her doctor, and they couldn’t help me. And I even went to the ER and I asked doctors and nurses, ‘How can I help her?’ I went to the police station. I honestly was asking everyone everywhere, ‘How can I help her? What can I do?’ And they all gave me the same answers: that I have to wait till either she ODs or she gets arrested, and then I will have some sort of edge to basically force her into recovery, and it just didn’t feel like the right thing. I was so hopeless.”
It was hearing Kate speak on TikTok that gave Cheryl the first ember of hope that there was a different way.
That she didn’t have to wait for bad things to happen to do something to help her daughter.
Through watching our Stop the Chaos training and joining the live Bootcamp experience, Cheryl gained the knowledge and strength to make hard changes that felt good.
“I feel so much stronger now. So much. I feel like a different person just being involved in Stop the Chaos, in Bootcamp, meeting with all the different families, and hearing from them and their experiences—I’ve learned so much.
“I can’t wait to be able to go back to all of the same people—the counselor at school and even her own doctor, who threw her hands up and said, ‘You know, there’s nothing [you] can do.’”
