Families often tell me:
👉 “She just doesn’t want it.”
👉 “He’s been to treatment before—it didn’t work.”
👉 “It’s not really that bad right now.”
These aren’t truths.
They’re what we call FMEs — Frequently Made Excuses.
FMEs are sneaky because they feel logical.
But really, they keep you stuck.
They’re the same kind of excuses your loved one’s addiction whispers to them:
➡️ “I don’t need help.”
➡️ “I’ve got it under control.”
➡️ “It’s not that bad.”
Here’s the hard truth:
FMEs protect the addiction, not your family.
So here’s your action step for today:
👉 Write down the last excuse you caught yourself making (even just in your head).
Then ask:
💡 “What CAN I do, right now, to move one step closer to recovery (the truth) for myself and my family?”
You’ll be surprised how powerful that question can be.
Send us an email and share your FME so we can practice flipping it together.
💚 Kate
P.S. I cover FME’s in my book, but we cover them in depth in our LIVE 8-week program for families who are impacted by addiction. Want to learn more? Click here.
