Addiction is Not About the Alcohol

When your loved one is in active addiction, it’s easy to believe the problem is the drinking or the using.

It’s not.

The drinking and the using are their solution to something deeper — pain, anxiety, depression, disconnection from self. They are trying to self-medicate an inside problem they don’t know how to solve any other way.

That’s why…

❌ Telling them to “just stop” doesn’t work.
❌ Waiting for them to “want it” is dangerous.
❌ Arguing with them when addiction is speaking will only spiral you deeper into chaos.

We need to stop asking them to give up the one thing they have that’s working for them (somewhat working) and start asking for what you all really want.

The truth? Addiction rewires the brain. By the time you see the symptoms — lying, denying, blaming, avoiding — they’re not making choices the way you think they are.

Here’s your action step for this week:

The next time your loved one says something hurtful, defensive, or untrue…

➡️ Pause.
➡️ Ask yourself: Is this their addiction talking, or recovery talking?
➡️ If it’s addiction, remind yourself: This is the illness, not the person I love.

The more you can separate the person from the illness, the more you protect yourself from getting pulled into the fight addiction wants you in.
